In the play Othello, Othello is moor, which is a race that in his society is frowned upon for being different. Even though he is a very powerful person, people may have still considered him beneath them. Desdemona did not see any problem with him being a moor. Othello may also see himself as lower than other people due to the status quo of his society. Iago messes with Othello’s head feeding him lies about Desdemona. Othello fell into these lies and ended up killing Desdemona. Iago played Othello like a fiddle. Othello admits he killed his wife, but for what he thought was the truth. He finds out later that he killed his wife on the words of a liar, Iago. Even though Othello is a moor, that is not the reason he killed his wife. The reason that ate away at him was all the lies that Iago fed to his mind. Him killing his wife for something she was not guilty of, caused him to go suicidal. His race did not really play much of a part in his death. The mental state he was in is the factor that led him into killing himself. Race had nothing to do with the death.
I agree Othello’s physical appearance is not what technically killed Desdemona, it was the lies Iago fed Othello. But would say Othello’s skin color is what prompted Iago to feed these lies to Othello and therefore ending in his wife’s death?

I completely agree that Iago was the cause of this tragedy. The skin color did not play a factor in their relationship, in fact the only factor was Iago and the constant lies. – Elioth A
